We have a new/old BAP team member to reintroduce! Dr. Dustin White is a Research Fellow at the University of York and is one of the founding members of the Baikal Archaeology Project, having conducted fieldwork in the region since 1999. His main areas of research include geoarchaeology, Quaternary stratigraphy and chronology, palaeopedology, malacology, cryptotephra, palaeoenvironmental reconstruction and the prehistory of Eurasia. A Holocene floodplain sequence from the Kirenga Valley, Lake Baikal region (Siberia), and its significance for molluscan and mammalian biogeography

The archaeological record in the Baikal region is characterised by a marked discontinuity separating different groups of hunter-gatherers within the Neolithic period. A range of sedimentary archives has been studied to investigate this issue and whether it had an environmental cause. Our focus has been on floodplain sequences from river valleys, which can augment other higher resolution records such as those from lakes. Here we report on the molluscs and small vertebrates recovered from a Holocene floodplain sequence [...]

Turning eastward: New radiocarbon and stable isotopic data for Middle Holocene hunter-gatherers from Fofanovo, Trans-Baikal, Siberia

A considerable amount of bioarchaeological research – including AMS 14C dating and stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses (δ13C and δ15N) – has been undertaken on the hunter-gatherers from the area west of Lake Baikal, known as Cis-Baikal. No such work has previously been reported for the east side of the lake, Trans-Baikal. Here, we present new radiocarbon dates and isotopic results for twenty individuals from the Fofanovo cemetery, located along the Selenga River on the southeast coast of [...]

Integrated stable isotopic and radiocarbon analyses of Neolithic and Bronze Age hunter-gatherers from the Little Sea and Upper Lena micro-regions, Cis-Baikal, Siberia

The Lake Baikal region of southern Siberia has a rich mortuary record that has provided the most comprehensive isotopic database for palaeodietary studies of north-temperate hunter-gatherers in the world, permitting more detailed reconstructions and finer-grained research questions than are usually possible. Building on previous work, this study contributes new δ13C, δ15N, and AMS radiocarbon dating results from the cemeteries of Verkholensk (n = 44) in the Upper Lena River micro-region and Ulan-Khada (n = 19) in the Little Sea micro-region. Our results [...]

Alyssa White article published in Journal of Archaeological Science

Congratulations to Alyssa White on her recent article published in the Journal of Archaeological Science! Mrs. White is currently a DPhil student at the University of Oxford under the supervision of Dr. Rick Schulting and Dr. Mark Hudson. This paper is based on Alyssa’s Master’s work for the BAP. She would like to acknowledge Andrew Lythe (another M.Sc. student from the year after her) whose research is also highlighted in the paper. He is currently a graduate student [...]
